Transportation emissions + What are we doing? + What's next? Scientists warn that emissions need to be cut in half over the next decade to avoid catastrophic impacts from climate change. Kelowna, transportation emissions increased during the pandemic. Total fuel sales per person was 10 per cent less in 2024 than in 2018 and overall fuel sales is held steady this year, at six percent more than 2018. This reflects and steady positive trend towards lower fuel sales per person since the pandemic height of fuel sales in 2022. Fuel sales do not capture all transportation emissions, notably the emissions from manufacturing vehicles or building infrastructure such as roads. Kelowna’s fuel sales also include fuel purchased by people who live in other cities. Still, fuel sales are one of the most direct ways to track transportation-related emissions. For more information on community greenhouse gas emissions see the Climate & Environment Council Priorities Dashboard. The Transportation Master Plan and Community Electric Vehicle and E-Bike Strategy recommend actions to speed up the adoption of electric vehicles. Electric vehicles are very important for reducing emissions, but they may not come quickly enough to meet our emissions targets. This is due to the rate of fleet turnover and supply chain challenges. We also need to consider emissions from manufacturing vehicles and building new roads. We are making it easier for more people to use car sharing, which can significantly reduce direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions. To meet CleanBC emissions targets it will also be necessary to make it easier for people to drive less. We will continue installing public EV chargers in strategic locations, adding to the existing public network of 12 EV chargers. Additionally, now that EV Readiness policies in new residential buildings began in 2024, we will shift our focus to expanding EV charging availability in existing multi-unit residential buildings through continued financial incentives and informational case studies. We are also continuing to invest in infrastructure to make it easier for people to walk, bike, and take transit. We are also developing The Commuter Choice Program (previously referred to as the Employer Commute Trip Reduction Program) that will help employers support and incentivize commuting by sustainable modes.
