In the fall of 2024, half of the trips taken to attend school (K-12) in Kelowna were by driving (48 per cent as a passenger, two per cent where a student drove) and the other half were by alternative modes. About one in five students (21 per cent) walked to and from school, 18 per cent took a school bus, eight per cent took public transit and four per cent rode a bicycle or other micromobility device. In 2018, 55 per cent of trips taken to and from school were by driving, 17 per cent were by walking, four per cent were by public transit, 17 per cent by school bus and five per cent by bicycle. Data for this metric comes from the Central Okanagan Household Travel Survey which took place most recently in fall of 2024 and prior to that in 2018. Safe Routes 4 Schools programs are delivered at 1-2 schools per year. This program aims to help improve air quality at schools by reducing vehicle emissions and encouraging students to walk or bike. We recently completed Safe Routes 4 School Improvements at Springvalley Elementary and North Glenmore Elementary. In 2024 and 2025 we will be working with Quigley Elementary and Bellevue Elementary to make Safe Routes 4 Schools improvements. We will report on this metric annually and work to keep it trending downward. The next Okanagan Household Travel survey which will measure typical weekday trips made by residents, including routine school trips, is planned for 2029 or 2030.
