Tree Canopy Cover - 2017
This layer displays the 2017 tree canopy cover for Ottawa. This dataset was created using infrared aerial photography and aerial LiDAR (light detection and ranging) to identify and distinguish tree canopies. A combination of eCognition and manual quality control at a scale of 1:1,000, were used to detect and remove gross errors. All features with an area of less than 2m2 were removed. More information on the methodology and sources of error can be found on the City of Ottawa website.
The data was created by Spatial Analysis Lab at the University of Vermont as a part of the Tree Canopy Assessment for Canada’s Capital Region, a collaborative project by the National Capital Commission, the City of Gatineau, and the City of Ottawa. The mapping of 2017 tree canopy cover establishes a baseline for future comparisons and provides necessary information for work under the City of Ottawa’s Urban Forest Management Plan.

Accuracy, Completeness, and Known Issues: A manual quality control of this dataset was completed at a scale of 1:1,000 to remove large errors. Quality control also included a removal of all features with an area of less than 2m2. This likely deleted newly-planted saplings in some areas.
