Special Study Area
Special Study Areas are locations where a member jurisdiction had indicated plans to change land use and therefore has Type 3 approval requirements for amending regional land use designations.
Special Study Areas identify locations where, prior to the adoption of the previous regional growth strategy in 2011, a member jurisdiction had expressed an intention to alter the existing land use for some or part of an area after undertaking a planning process and is anticipating requesting a future regional land use designation amendment as a result. Amending regional land use designations for areas with a Special Study Area overlay is a Type 3 amendment and includes any associated adjustments to the Urban Containment Boundary.
Special Study Areas are intended to be a temporary measure that indicate the likelihood of a future regional land use designation amendment. The boundaries for Special Study Areas are not to be expanded nor are new areas to be created. Amendments to Special Study Areas can only be deletions and may occur either after the regional growth strategy has been amended to change the regional land use designation of the Special Study Area or when a member jurisdiction decides to eliminate a Special Study Area.
Until the Metro Vancouver Regional District Board approves a regional land use designation amendment, the current regional land use designations apply within the Special Study Area.
