Between 2010 and 2023, 17 remote, motion-activated wildlife cameras (Reconyx PC90 Rapidfire Covert IR, Reconyx PC800 Hyperfire Professional Semi-covert IR and PC 900 Hyperfire Professional High Output Covert IR) were deployed in the park to monitor caribou presence. Cameras were placed non-randomly in accessible locations where animal captures were more likely (e.g. on travel corridors). In 2015, use of the camera data was expanded to the analysis of grey wolf occupancy in Pukaskwa’s coastal forests. A 5.5 km grid square design was used and each square with > 5 km of coastline and > 5 km² of park area was selected, for a total of 13 squares. Camera placement was adjusted for ongoing monitoring of these 13 squares for grey wolf occupancy. Cameras are serviced annually to replace batteries and retrieve images. All photos are viewed and trap events are recorded. A trap event is a continuous sequence of images in which the same individual(s) appear and the photos are not separated by more than 10 minutes. In addition to motion-activated photography, the cameras are set to take one photo per day to confirm proper operation. Effort per trap season is calculated using these photos. |
