Help & FAQ The Community Safety Data Portal offers residents a glimpse of crime and police activity in their neighbourhoods. York Region Police hopes the Community Safety Data Portal will encourage the public to take an active role in community safety and crime prevention. We are proud to be a transparent organization and believe involving the community benefits us all. The map only includes incidents for which a police report was filed. To protect individuals' privacy and safety, addresses at which incidents occurred are not included, and instead each occurrence is mapped to the nearest intersection. Certain types of crime are omitted for reasons of privacy or to protect the integrity of police investigations. The data represented on the map includes, but is not limited to, proactive policing efforts, break and enter, theft, theft of vehicle, theft from vehicle, homicide, robbery, assault, sex offences, arson, missing persons, weapons offences, traffic enforcement, liquor and drug offences. York Region is one of the safest communities in Canada. Some areas of the map may appear to have more incidents because all occurrence locations are mapped to the nearest intersection for privacy. Highly-populated areas, or areas with a high-volume of foot traffic, like shopping centers, entertainment venues, schools and parks, may be subject to more police reports. The rate of crime, however, may not necessarily be disproportionate. If you are concerned about the level of crime in your area, contact your local police district and speak to the Crime Prevention Officer for steps you can take to remain safe and prevent crime You can take note of crime trends in your area and ensure you take appropriate steps to protect yourself and your property. We encourage you to mobilize members of your community in crime prevention initiatives, such as starting a Neighbourhood Watch program. To start a Neighbourhood Watch program please visit yrp.ca and click on Neighbourhood Watch in the crime prevention section of the website. You will be asked to provide some information and to email it to [email protected]. Your email will be directed to the local crime prevention officer in your area and you will be contacted and provided with a start-up information package. No area is immune to crime regardless of what area you live in. The purpose of this map is simply to inform and engage our residents in taking an active role in crime prevention. The system is designed to provide citizens with an overview of police activity as opposed to a detailed and comprehensive account of it.                                 If you are in danger or in the case of an emergency, always dial 9-1-1. While the applications within the Community Safety Data Portal are not available in multiple languages, they should adapt natively to your existing browser language settings and respond to most translation extensions featured on popular browsers.
                                    Please be aware that these options may result in the exclusion or mistranslation of information.
                                    For additional assistance in translating or interpreting information provided by York Regional Police within the Community Safety Data Portal, please contact your local police district and ask to speak to the Crime Prevention Officer. The crime map data is updated automatically each morning at approximately 3:00 am. 
                                    Some incidents may be excluded in this update process if an error is detected in the data and needs to be resolved before publishing to the crime map. Information contained in the National and Provincial Sex Offender Registries is
                                    confidential. York Regional Police is prohibited by law from releasing such information Any member of the public can sign up to receive the YRP e-Newsletter. 
                                    This additional service is free and provides customized reports via email to any subscriber. Having a well informed community is effective in reducing crime. Please contact the officer investigating your incident to make such a request. If you suspect there is an error on the map, please contact your local police district to report it.                         Occurrence Dates:  Users can choose pre-determined dates or input a custom date range themselves.
                        Occurrence Filters:  Allows a user to select only the occurrence types they want to view on the map.
                        Occurrence Groupings:  Choose between primary incidents, secondary incidents, or show all incident types at once.
                        Occurrence Flags: View special interest occurrence groups such as Violent Crimes or Shootings. 
                        Community Safety Alerts: View occurrences which have additional public safety information or evidence submissions requests where you can learn more or help solve the crime. You can also view these occurrences in the filtered 'Community Safety Alerts' section on the right hand panel. Crime Map: Occurrence icons will be shown on the map based on which filters (if any) are applied. Selecting an icon will bring up a map tip popup in the upper left corner
                        Map tips include the date, location, and description of the event as well as relevant links
                        If multiple crime types occurred at one address, arrows at the top of the map tip allow users to toggle between multiple occurrences Occurrence Charts: Based on the filters selected, a chart is shown on the right side of the screen identifying how many occurrences have taken place in the selected date range Crime Stoppers tip submission: To submit an anonymous tip related to an occurrence, users can select the Submit a Tip link in the map tip window. Learn more about Crime Stoppers of York Region here Report and occurrence dates (for custom date range searches): Occurrences are counted in the year they occurred. (E.g. an assault occurred in 2016 but is reported in 2021.  This occurrence will be displayed on map with 2016 data, not in 2021 when it was reported)
                        Reported dates occur the day a member of the public initiates an investigation with YRP
                        Occurrence dates identify when the incident took place Multiple occurrences at the same address: The York Regional Police Crime Map uses Occurrence Numbers to identify specific incidents.  Each occurrence number may include up to four different crime types, if multiple crimes took place.
                        If more than one crime type occurred, the map will show multiple points at the same address for that occurrence Value to the public: Community members can take action to help protect persons/property in their areas 
                        Identify crime trends and any safety concerns in your neighbourhood
                        Submit tips directly to York Regional Police or anonymously to Crime Stoppers
                        Community groups such as Neighbourhood Watch can get involved Dynamic Interactivity: The Community Safety Data Portal displays York Regional Police occurrence data on a map, and displayed in interactive charts.  An interactive "Community Safety Alerts" section is also included below the charts with active media release links and digital evidence submission requests.
                        A community member can open the portal, select their municipality, and zoom in to their neighbourhood.  The dynamic neighbourhood charting on the right hand panel is updated automatically to reflect only what’s filtered and shown on the map. The "Community Safety Alerts" section is dynamic also dynamic and updates based on your map view. Overall summary of the data: Data will be updated in the morning at approximately 3:00am
                        Some data may be excluded to protect the privacy and safety of victims, or the integrity of police investigations
                        The Community Safety Map does not capture all calls for police service. Currently, the map displays data for criminal/provincial offences, motor vehicle collisions and missing person investigations
                        Any occurrence featured on the map has taken place within one of York Region's nine municipalities and resulted in a police report. Occurrences on provincial roads, including 400-series highways, parts of Highway 48 and other roads within York Region, are reported to the Ontario Provincial Police and will not appear on the Community Safety Portal
                        Data included on the map may change based on new information or during the course of a police investigation. For example, police may begin a break-and-enter investigation, but later determine the type of crime to be Mischief. The occurrence will now be identified as Mischief on the map.
                        Only Motor Vehicle Collisions (MVCs) appear on the map at the location they occurred
                        If the location of the incident is unknown, the occurrence will be included at the location from which it was reported Digital Evidence Requested This selection will appear for occurrences on the map in which investigators have asked the public to submit digital evidence they may have. Digital evidence may include photo or video footage Community Safety Map Occurrence Types: Assaults -  Without the consent of another, an assault is committed when force is applied to that person either directly or indirectly, or they attempt or threaten by an act or gesture to apply force to that person.  This grouping includes; assault, assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, assault peace/police officer, and discharging a firearm with the intent to cause bodily harm.
                        Arson - This occurs when a person intentionally or recklessly causes damage by fire or explosion to property that is not wholly owned by them, which can also include knowing that a property may be inhabited, or the arson causes bodily harm to another person.
                        Attempt Murder - This grouping includes attempt murder and conspire to commit murder.
                        Break & Enter – Encompasses incidents when a person has, or attempts to, enter a place with the intent of committing an indictable offence.  This grouping includes residential, commercial and school properties.  Also included is theft of firearms from a building or vehicle.
                        Cannabis Act - This grouping includes all non-criminal provincial Cannabis Act charges.
                        Drug Violations - This grouping includes multiple drug related violations such as; criminal Cannabis Act charges, along with other CDSA importing/exporting, possession, production, and trafficking offences.
                        Firearms Violations - This grouping includes offences related to someone using a firearm, possessing a firearm, or pointing a firearm.  Offences include both the use of real and imitation firearms.
                        Fraud - The wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.  This grouping includes fraud occurrences such as; cheque, computer, credit card, and identity theft.
                        Impaired Operation – This grouping includes alcohol and drug related impaired calls, impaired death investigations, as well as incidents where a driver fails to provide a sample during an investigation.
                        Mischief – Any person who willfully destroys or damages property, renders the property dangerous or useless, or interferes with the lawful use of property.  This grouping includes various mischief calls such as; mischief to property, graffiti, religious property, and war memorials.
                        Missing Person - Includes non-criminal missing person incidents, both youths and adults.
                        Other Criminal Code - This grouping includes a wide variety of criminal offences including (but not limited to); obstruct police, trespass by night, disguise with intent, utter threats to property, and public mischief.
                        Other Persons Crimes - This grouping includes various incidents of crimes against a person such as (but not limited to); criminal harassment, utter threats to person, harassing communications, and some sexual violations.
                        Other Property Crimes - Illegal acts committed to take, or interfere, with someone else’s property.  This grouping includes crimes against property such as; possession of property obtained by crime, and trafficking in stolen goods.
                        Provincial Offences - This grouping includes various Provincial Acts such as Highway Traffic Act, Trespass to Property Act, Liquor License Act, and Emergency Measures and Civil Protection Act.
                        Public Morals - This grouping includes incidents where the following may be involved; bawdy houses, prostitution, or obtaining/procuring sexual services.
                        Robbery - When a theft is carried out with violence or the threat of violence.  This grouping includes robbery offences such as; financial institutions, retail, street level, and home invasions.
                        Sexual Violations - This grouping includes various offences that are sexual in nature.  Included offences (but not limited to) are; sexual assault, voyeurism, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, and sexual exploitation.
                        Theft Over $5,000 – Committed when someone steals property not belonging to them with a value greater than $5,000.  This grouping includes theft offences such as shoplifting, theft, and theft from a motor vehicle.  Excludes Theft of Motor Vehicle.
                        Theft Under $5,000 – Committed when someone steals property not belonging to them with a value less than $5,000.  This grouping includes theft offences such as shoplifting, theft of bicycles, theft, and theft from a motor vehicle.
                        Theft of Motor Vehicle – Committed when someone takes a vehicle not belonging to them.  This grouping includes theft of motor vehicle, and taking a vehicle without consent from the owner.
                        Traffic Violations - This grouping includes criminal traffic violations such as; dangerous operation, driving while prohibited, and criminal negligence while driving.
                        Violations Causing Death - This grouping includes incidents such as murder, manslaughter, as well as other criminal violations causing death.
                        Violations Deprivation of Freedom – Unlawful acts depriving an individual of their freedom or ability to leave an area safely.  This grouping includes abduction, forcible confinement, and trafficking in persons occurrences.
                        Weapons Violations - This grouping includes various weapons violations such as possession and trafficking (does not include firearms, please see 'firearms violations' for those occurrences).

                        Road Safety Map Occurrence Types:


                        Careless Driving - This is a provincial offence when a person drives a vehicle on a highway without due care and attention, or without consideration for other persons using the highway.
                        Dangerous Driving - This is a criminal offence when a person drives a motor vehicle with reckless disregard for the lives and safety of others.  This offence occurs in a public place where people are likely to be present.
                        Driving Disqualified/Suspended - Disqualified driving is a criminal offence and occurs when a person is found driving a motor vehicle while under a judge’s order not to drive.  Suspended driving is a provincial offence and occurs when a person is driving a motor vehicle while under a driver licence suspension (originally resulting from unpaid fines, remedial programs, etc). 
                        Driving While Prohibited - When a person is convicted of a criminal driving offence, they become prohibited from driving a motor vehicle for a certain time period.  If they are found driving during that time, they are charged with the criminal offence of driving while prohibited.
                        Graduated Licence Suspension - The If a person is found operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol level in between the warning ranges of .05 and .08, they will receive an immediate three-day driver’s licence suspension at the roadside.  If the same person registers a warning range on another date, the suspension length and severity will increase each time.
                        Impaired Operation – This grouping includes alcohol and drug related impaired calls, impaired death investigations, as well as incidents where a driver fails to provide a sample during an investigation.
                        Street Racing - This grouping involves occurrences that include, but not limited to; two or more drivers engaged in a competition while driving at a speed that is a marked departure from the legal limit, when a driver indicates the intention of chasing another vehicle, or a driver operating a vehicle at a rate of speed that is marked departure from the legal limit and is repeatedly changing lanes while close to other vehicles so as to advance through ordinary traffic.

                        Stunt Driving - This grouping includes, but not limited to, various driving behaviours such as; driving a motor vehicle at a speed much higher than that of the posted limit, driving with a person in the trunk, causing a vehicle to spin or circle without maintaining control over it, or causing any or all of the tires to lift from the surface.
                        Traffic Collision (Fail to Remain) - Where an accident occurs on a highway, every person in charge of a vehicle, whether directly or indirectly involved, shall remain at the scene or immediately return to it.
                        Traffic Collision (Fail to Report) - When involved in an accident, drivers are required to report it to police immediately, where there is personal injury or substantial damage to the vehicle(s).
                        Traffic Collision (Fatal) - Where a person is involved in a motor vehicle collision and sustains bodily injuries resulting in death.
                        Traffic Collision (Personal Injury) - Any person involved in an accident sustains injuries, whether they are minor or major in nature.
                        Traffic Collision (Property Damage) - Any motor vehicle collisions where damage occurs to an object (vehicles, utility poles and signs, etc) and nobody was injured. "Occurrence Flags": Violent Crimes- These occurrences have some type of violence involved. Includes offences (but not limited to) assaults, robberies, weapons violations, and violations causing death. 
                        Shootings- This flag includes occurrences where a confirmed firearm discharge occurred. Examples could include a person or their property being shot at.
                        Hate Crime - These occurrences are motivated by a persons hate, bias, or prejudice toward someone's race, national or ethnic origin, disabilities, age, gender, sexual orientation or language.

                        "Trends Dashboards": There are several date options at the bottom left of each trend dashboard; 7, 30, 180 and 365 day variances.  The data shown in each section is compared to the previous year in that same time frame.  For example: a seven-day variance selection such as October 1-7, 2021 will compare to October 1-7, 2020. "Special Groupings" that are excluded from the Community Safety Map: Bail Violations - This grouping includes bail violations and breaches of a recognizance.
                        Betting and Gaming - This grouping includes offences for keepers of betting houses, and the people who are found inside.
                        By-Law (maybe) - This grouping includes all municipality by-laws in York Region.
                        Death Investigations (possibly sudden death calls) - This grouping includes non criminal, non traffic, related incidents where death has occurred.
                        Disputes - This grouping includes non criminal dispute occurrences.
                        Federal Violations - This grouping includes various federal acts.  Examples are; Income Tax Act, Canada Shipping Act, Canada Health Act, Competition Act, Firearms Act, Quarantine Act, and other acts.
                        Fire - This grouping includes non criminal fire calls.
                        Injured Person / Accident - This grouping includes calls that are non criminal, and where a non-fatal injury has occurred.
                        Mental Health - This grouping includes incidents with a mental health component involved.
                        Noise Complaint - This grouping includes non criminal noise complaints.
                        Property - Includes non criminal incidents such as found property, and recovered/seized property.

                        Animal Complaints - This grouping includes non-bylaw animal complaint calls. "Case Status": Status “Open”:  - Case is open / pending, is a cold case, or incomplete and still under investigation.Status “Closed”:  - Case is closed - Case closed due to insufficient evidence to proceed (Criminal / Non- Criminal).Status “Solved”:  - Case is solved with charges laid or solved without charges laid. Property - Includes non criminal incidents such as found property, and recovered/seized property. Animal Complaints - This grouping includes non-bylaw animal complaint calls. Status “Open”:  - Case is open / pending, is a cold case, or incomplete and still under investigation. Status “Closed”:  - Case is closed - Case closed due to insufficient evidence to proceed (Criminal / Non- Criminal). Status “Solved”:  - Case is solved with charges laid or solved without charges laid. Why does York Regional Police share crime maps and other data with the public via the Community Safety Data Portal? The Community Safety Data Portal offers residents a glimpse of crime and police activity in their neighbourhoods. York Region Police hopes the Community Safety Data Portal will encourage the public to take an active role in community safety and crime prevention. We are proud to be a transparent organization and believe involving the community benefits us all. Are all incidents of crime included on the community safety map? The map only includes incidents for which a police report was filed. To protect individuals' privacy and safety, addresses at which incidents occurred are not included, and instead each occurrence is mapped to the nearest intersection. Certain types of crime are omitted for reasons of privacy or to protect the integrity of police investigations. What types of crimes are mapped? The data represented on the map includes, but is not limited to, proactive policing efforts, 
                                    break and enter, theft, theft of vehicle, theft from vehicle, homicide, robbery, assault, sex offences, arson, missing persons, weapons offences, 
                                    traffic enforcement, liquor and drug offences. There are many incidents in my neighbourhood; does that mean I live in a dangerous area? York Region is one of the safest communities in Canada. Some areas of the map may appear to have more incidents because all occurrence locations are mapped to the nearest intersection for privacy. Highly-populated areas, or areas with a high-volume of foot traffic, like shopping centers, entertainment venues, schools and parks, may be subject to more police reports.                         Occurrence Dates:  Users can choose pre-determined dates or input a custom date range themselves.
                        Occurrence Filters:  Allows a user to select only the occurrence types they want to view on the map.
                        Occurrence Groupings:  Choose between primary incidents, secondary incidents, or show all incident types at once.
                        Occurrence Flags: View special interest occurrence groups such as Violent Crimes or Shootings. 
                        Community Safety Alerts: View occurrences which have additional public safety information or evidence submissions requests where you can learn more or help solve the crime. You can also view these occurrences in the filtered 'Community Safety Alerts' section on the right hand panel.                         If multiple crime types occurred at one address, arrows at the top of the map tip allow users to toggle between multiple occurrences Occurrence Charts: Based on the filters selected, a chart is shown on the right side of the screen identifying how many occurrences have taken place in the selected date range Crime Stoppers tip submission: To submit an anonymous tip related to an occurrence, users can select the Submit a Tip link in the map tip window. (E.g. an assault occurred in 2016 but is reported in 2021.  This occurrence will be displayed on map with 2016 data, not in 2021 when it was reported)

                        Occurrence dates identify when the incident took place Multiple occurrences at the same address: The York Regional Police Crime Map uses Occurrence Numbers to identify specific incidents.  Each occurrence number may include up to four different crime types, if multiple crimes took place.
                        If more than one crime type occurred, the map will show multiple points at the same address for that occurrence Value to the public: Community members can take action to help protect persons/property in their areas 
                        Identify crime trends and any safety concerns in your neighbourhood
                        Submit tips directly to York Regional Police or anonymously to Crime Stoppers
                        Community groups such as Neighbourhood Watch can get involved Dynamic Interactivity: The Community Safety Data Portal displays York Regional Police occurrence data on a map, and displayed in interactive charts.  An interactive "Community Safety Alerts" section is also included below the charts with active media release links and digital evidence submission requests.
                        A community member can open the portal, select their municipality, and zoom in to their neighbourhood.  The dynamic neighbourhood charting on the right hand panel is updated automatically to reflect only what’s filtered and shown on the map. The "Community Safety Alerts" section is dynamic also dynamic and updates based on your map view. Overall summary of the data: Data will be updated in the morning at approximately 3:00am
                        Some data may be excluded to protect the privacy and safety of victims, or the integrity of police investigations
                        The Community Safety Map does not capture all calls for police service. Currently, the map displays data for criminal/provincial offences, motor vehicle collisions and missing person investigations
                        Any occurrence featured on the map has taken place within one of York Region's nine municipalities and resulted in a police report. Occurrences on provincial roads, including 400-series highways, parts of Highway 48 and other roads within York Region, are reported to the Ontario Provincial Police and will not appear on the Community Safety Portal
                        Data included on the map may change based on new information or during the course of a police investigation. For example, police may begin a break-and-enter investigation, but later determine the type of crime to be Mischief. The occurrence will now be identified as Mischief on the map.
                        Only Motor Vehicle Collisions (MVCs) appear on the map at the location they occurred
                        If the location of the incident is unknown, the occurrence will be included at the location from which it was reported Digital Evidence Requested This selection will appear for occurrences on the map in which investigators have asked the public to submit digital evidence they may have. Digital evidence may include photo or video footage Community Safety Map Occurrence Types: Assaults -  Without the consent of another, an assault is committed when force is applied to that person either directly or indirectly, or they attempt or threaten by an act or gesture to apply force to that person.  This grouping includes; assault, assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, assault peace/police officer, and discharging a firearm with the intent to cause bodily harm.
                        Arson - This occurs when a person intentionally or recklessly causes damage by fire or explosion to property that is not wholly owned by them, which can also include knowing that a property may be inhabited, or the arson causes bodily harm to another person.
                        Attempt Murder - This grouping includes attempt murder and conspire to commit murder.
                        Break & Enter – Encompasses incidents when a person has, or attempts to, enter a place with the intent of committing an indictable offence.  This grouping includes residential, commercial and school properties.  Also included is theft of firearms from a building or vehicle.
                        Cannabis Act - This grouping includes all non-criminal provincial Cannabis Act charges.
                        Drug Violations - This grouping includes multiple drug related violations such as; criminal Cannabis Act charges, along with other CDSA importing/exporting, possession, production, and trafficking offences.
                        Firearms Violations - This grouping includes offences related to someone using a firearm, possessing a firearm, or pointing a firearm.  Offences include both the use of real and imitation firearms.
                        Fraud - The wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.  This grouping includes fraud occurrences such as; cheque, computer, credit card, and identity theft.
                        Impaired Operation – This grouping includes alcohol and drug related impaired calls, impaired death investigations, as well as incidents where a driver fails to provide a sample during an investigation.
                        Mischief – Any person who willfully destroys or damages property, renders the property dangerous or useless, or interferes with the lawful use of property.  This grouping includes various mischief calls such as; mischief to property, graffiti, religious property, and war memorials.
                        Missing Person - Includes non-criminal missing person incidents, both youths and adults.
                        Other Criminal Code - This grouping includes a wide variety of criminal offences including (but not limited to); obstruct police, trespass by night, disguise with intent, utter threats to property, and public mischief.
                        Other Persons Crimes - This grouping includes various incidents of crimes against a person such as (but not limited to); criminal harassment, utter threats to person, harassing communications, and some sexual violations.
                        Other Property Crimes - Illegal acts committed to take, or interfere, with someone else’s property.  This grouping includes crimes against property such as; possession of property obtained by crime, and trafficking in stolen goods.
                        Provincial Offences - This grouping includes various Provincial Acts such as Highway Traffic Act, Trespass to Property Act, Liquor License Act, and Emergency Measures and Civil Protection Act.
                        Public Morals - This grouping includes incidents where the following may be involved; bawdy houses, prostitution, or obtaining/procuring sexual services.
                        Robbery - When a theft is carried out with violence or the threat of violence.  This grouping includes robbery offences such as; financial institutions, retail, street level, and home invasions.
                        Sexual Violations - This grouping includes various offences that are sexual in nature.  Included offences (but not limited to) are; sexual assault, voyeurism, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, and sexual exploitation.
                        Theft Over $5,000 – Committed when someone steals property not belonging to them with a value greater than $5,000.  This grouping includes theft offences such as shoplifting, theft, and theft from a motor vehicle.  Excludes Theft of Motor Vehicle.
                        Theft Under $5,000 – Committed when someone steals property not belonging to them with a value less than $5,000.  This grouping includes theft offences such as shoplifting, theft of bicycles, theft, and theft from a motor vehicle.
                        Theft of Motor Vehicle – Committed when someone takes a vehicle not belonging to them.  This grouping includes theft of motor vehicle, and taking a vehicle without consent from the owner.
                        Traffic Violations - This grouping includes criminal traffic violations such as; dangerous operation, driving while prohibited, and criminal negligence while driving.
                        Violations Causing Death - This grouping includes incidents such as murder, manslaughter, as well as other criminal violations causing death.
                        Violations Deprivation of Freedom – Unlawful acts depriving an individual of their freedom or ability to leave an area safely.  This grouping includes abduction, forcible confinement, and trafficking in persons occurrences.
                        Weapons Violations - This grouping includes various weapons violations such as possession and trafficking (does not include firearms, please see 'firearms violations' for those occurrences).

                        Road Safety Map Occurrence Types:


                        Careless Driving - This is a provincial offence when a person drives a vehicle on a highway without due care and attention, or without consideration for other persons using the highway.
                        Dangerous Driving - This is a criminal offence when a person drives a motor vehicle with reckless disregard for the lives and safety of others.  This offence occurs in a public place where people are likely to be present.
                        Driving Disqualified/Suspended - Disqualified driving is a criminal offence and occurs when a person is found driving a motor vehicle while under a judge’s order not to drive.  Suspended driving is a provincial offence and occurs when a person is driving a motor vehicle while under a driver licence suspension (originally resulting from unpaid fines, remedial programs, etc). 
                        Driving While Prohibited - When a person is convicted of a criminal driving offence, they become prohibited from driving a motor vehicle for a certain time period.  If they are found driving during that time, they are charged with the criminal offence of driving while prohibited.
                        Graduated Licence Suspension - The If a person is found operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol level in between the warning ranges of .05 and .08, they will receive an immediate three-day driver’s licence suspension at the roadside.  If the same person registers a warning range on another date, the suspension length and severity will increase each time.
                        Impaired Operation – This grouping includes alcohol and drug related impaired calls, impaired death investigations, as well as incidents where a driver fails to provide a sample during an investigation.
                        Street Racing - This grouping involves occurrences that include, but not limited to; two or more drivers engaged in a competition while driving at a speed that is a marked departure from the legal limit, when a driver indicates the intention of chasing another vehicle, or a driver operating a vehicle at a rate of speed that is marked departure from the legal limit and is repeatedly changing lanes while close to other vehicles so as to advance through ordinary traffic.

                        Stunt Driving - This grouping includes, but not limited to, various driving behaviours such as; driving a motor vehicle at a speed much higher than that of the posted limit, driving with a person in the trunk, causing a vehicle to spin or circle without maintaining control over it, or causing any or all of the tires to lift from the surface.
                        Traffic Collision (Fail to Remain) - Where an accident occurs on a highway, every person in charge of a vehicle, whether directly or indirectly involved, shall remain at the scene or immediately return to it.
                        Traffic Collision (Fail to Report) - When involved in an accident, drivers are required to report it to police immediately, where there is personal injury or substantial damage to the vehicle(s).
                        Traffic Collision (Fatal) - Where a person is involved in a motor vehicle collision and sustains bodily injuries resulting in death.
                        Traffic Collision (Personal Injury) - Any person involved in an accident sustains injuries, whether they are minor or major in nature.
                        Traffic Collision (Property Damage) - Any motor vehicle collisions where damage occurs to an object (vehicles, utility poles and signs, etc) and nobody was injured. "Occurrence Flags": Violent Crimes- These occurrences have some type of violence involved. Includes offences (but not limited to) assaults, robberies, weapons violations, and violations causing death. 
                        Shootings- This flag includes occurrences where a confirmed firearm discharge occurred. Examples could include a person or their property being shot at.
                        Hate Crime - These occurrences are motivated by a persons hate, bias, or prejudice toward someone's race, national or ethnic origin, disabilities, age, gender, sexual orientation or language.

                        "Trends Dashboards": There are several date options at the bottom left of each trend dashboard; 7, 30, 180 and 365 day variances.  The data shown in each section is compared to the previous year in that same time frame.  For example: a seven-day variance selection such as October 1-7, 2021 will compare to October 1-7, 2020. "Special Groupings" that are excluded from the Community Safety Map: Bail Violations - This grouping includes bail violations and breaches of a recognizance.
                        Betting and Gaming - This grouping includes offences for keepers of betting houses, and the people who are found inside.
                        By-Law (maybe) - This grouping includes all municipality by-laws in York Region.
                        Death Investigations (possibly sudden death calls) - This grouping includes non criminal, non traffic, related incidents where death has occurred.
                        Disputes - This grouping includes non criminal dispute occurrences.
                        Federal Violations - This grouping includes various federal acts.  Examples are; Income Tax Act, Canada Shipping Act, Canada Health Act, Competition Act, Firearms Act, Quarantine Act, and other acts.
                        Fire - This grouping includes non criminal fire calls.
                        Injured Person / Accident - This grouping includes calls that are non criminal, and where a non-fatal injury has occurred.
                        Mental Health - This grouping includes incidents with a mental health component involved.

Drug Violations - This grouping includes multiple drug related violations such as; criminal Cannabis Act charges, along with other CDSA importing/exporting, possession, production, and trafficking offences. Firearms Violations - This grouping includes offences related to someone using a firearm, possessing a firearm, or pointing a firearm.  Offences include both the use of real and imitation firearms. Fraud - The wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.  This grouping includes fraud occurrences such as; cheque, computer, credit card, and identity theft. Impaired Operation – This grouping includes alcohol and drug related impaired calls, impaired death investigations, as well as incidents where a driver fails to provide a sample during an investigation. Mischief – Any person who willfully destroys or damages property, renders the property dangerous or useless, or interferes with the lawful use of property.  This grouping includes various mischief calls such as; mischief to property, graffiti, religious property, and war memorials. Missing Person - Includes non-criminal missing person incidents, both youths and adults. Other Criminal Code - This grouping includes a wide variety of criminal offences including (but not limited to); obstruct police, trespass by night, disguise with intent, utter threats to property, and public mischief. Other Persons Crimes - This grouping includes various incidents of crimes against a person such as (but not limited to); criminal harassment, utter threats to person, harassing communications, and some sexual violations. Other Property Crimes - Illegal acts committed to take, or interfere, with someone else’s property.  This grouping includes crimes against property such as; possession of property obtained by crime, and trafficking in stolen goods. Provincial Offences - This grouping includes various Provincial Acts such as Highway Traffic Act, Trespass to Property Act, Liquor License Act, and Emergency Measures and Civil Protection Act. Public Morals - This grouping includes incidents where the following may be involved; bawdy houses, prostitution, or obtaining/procuring sexual services. Robbery - When a theft is carried out with violence or the threat of violence.  This grouping includes robbery offences such as; financial institutions, retail, street level, and home invasions. Sexual Violations - This grouping includes various offences that are sexual in nature.  Included offences (but not limited to) are; sexual assault, voyeurism, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, and sexual exploitation. Theft Over $5,000 – Committed when someone steals property not belonging to them with a value greater than $5,000.  This grouping includes theft offences such as shoplifting, theft, and theft from a motor vehicle.  Excludes Theft of Motor Vehicle. Theft Under $5,000 – Committed when someone steals property not belonging to them with a value less than $5,000.  This grouping includes theft offences such as shoplifting, theft of bicycles, theft, and theft from a motor vehicle. Theft of Motor Vehicle – Committed when someone takes a vehicle not belonging to them.  This grouping includes theft of motor vehicle, and taking a vehicle without consent from the owner. Traffic Violations - This grouping includes criminal traffic violations such as; dangerous operation, driving while prohibited, and criminal negligence while driving. Violations Causing Death - This grouping includes incidents such as murder, manslaughter, as well as other criminal violations causing death. Violations Deprivation of Freedom – Unlawful acts depriving an individual of their freedom or ability to leave an area safely.  This grouping includes abduction, forcible confinement, and trafficking in persons occurrences. Weapons Violations - This grouping includes various weapons violations such as possession and trafficking (does not include firearms, please see 'firearms violations' for those occurrences). Road Safety Map Occurrence Types: Careless Driving - This is a provincial offence when a person drives a vehicle on a highway without due care and attention, or without consideration for other persons using the highway. Dangerous Driving - This is a criminal offence when a person drives a motor vehicle with reckless disregard for the lives and safety of others.  This offence occurs in a public place where people are likely to be present. Driving Disqualified/Suspended - Disqualified driving is a criminal offence and occurs when a person is found driving a motor vehicle while under a judge’s order not to drive.  Suspended driving is a provincial offence and occurs when a person is driving a motor vehicle while under a driver licence suspension (originally resulting from unpaid fines, remedial programs, etc). Driving While Prohibited - When a person is convicted of a criminal driving offence, they become prohibited from driving a motor vehicle for a certain time period.  If they are found driving during that time, they are charged with the criminal offence of driving while prohibited. Graduated Licence Suspension - The If a person is found operating a motor vehicle with a blood-alcohol level in between the warning ranges of .05 and .08, they will receive an immediate three-day driver’s licence suspension at the roadside.  If the same person registers a warning range on another date, the suspension length and severity will increase each time. Impaired Operation – This grouping includes alcohol and drug related impaired calls, impaired death investigations, as well as incidents where a driver fails to provide a sample during an investigation. Street Racing - This grouping involves occurrences that include, but not limited to; two or more drivers engaged in a competition while driving at a speed that is a marked departure from the legal limit, when a driver indicates the intention of chasing another vehicle, or a driver operating a vehicle at a rate of speed that is marked departure from the legal limit and is repeatedly changing lanes while close to other vehicles so as to advance through ordinary traffic. Stunt Driving - This grouping includes, but not limited to, various driving behaviours such as; driving a motor vehicle at a speed much higher than that of the posted limit, driving with a person in the trunk, causing a vehicle to spin or circle without maintaining control over it, or causing any or all of the tires to lift from the surface. Traffic Collision (Fail to Remain) - Where an accident occurs on a highway, every person in charge of a vehicle, whether directly or indirectly involved, shall remain at the scene or immediately return to it. Traffic Collision (Fail to Report) - When involved in an accident, drivers are required to report it to police immediately, where there is personal injury or substantial damage to the vehicle(s). Traffic Collision (Fatal) - Where a person is involved in a motor vehicle collision and sustains bodily injuries resulting in death. Traffic Collision (Personal Injury) - Any person involved in an accident sustains injuries, whether they are minor or major in nature. Traffic Collision (Property Damage) - Any motor vehicle collisions where damage occurs to an object (vehicles, utility poles and signs, etc) and nobody was injured. "Occurrence Flags": Violent Crimes- These occurrences have some type of violence involved. Includes offences (but not limited to) assaults, robberies, weapons violations, and violations causing death. Shootings- This flag includes occurrences where a confirmed firearm discharge occurred. Examples could include a person or their property being shot at. Hate Crime - These occurrences are motivated by a persons hate, bias, or prejudice toward someone's race, national or ethnic origin, disabilities, age, gender, sexual orientation or language. "Trends Dashboards": There are several date options at the bottom left of each trend dashboard; 7, 30, 180 and 365 day variances.  The data shown in each section is compared to the previous year in that same time frame.  For example: a seven-day variance selection such as October 1-7, 2021 will compare to October 1-7, 2020. Bail Violations - This grouping includes bail violations and breaches of a recognizance. Betting and Gaming - This grouping includes offences for keepers of betting houses, and the people who are found inside. By-Law (maybe) - This grouping includes all municipality by-laws in York Region. Death Investigations (possibly sudden death calls) - This grouping includes non criminal, non traffic, related incidents where death has occurred. Disputes - This grouping includes non criminal dispute occurrences. Federal Violations - This grouping includes various federal acts.  Examples are; Income Tax Act, Canada Shipping Act, Canada Health Act, Competition Act, Firearms Act, Quarantine Act, and other acts. Fire - This grouping includes non criminal fire calls. Injured Person / Accident - This grouping includes calls that are non criminal, and where a non-fatal injury has occurred. Mental Health - This grouping includes incidents with a mental health component involved. Noise Complaint - This grouping includes non criminal noise complaints. Property - Includes non criminal incidents such as found property, and recovered/seized property. Animal Complaints - This grouping includes non-bylaw animal complaint calls. Status “Open”:  - Case is open / pending, is a cold case, or incomplete and still under investigation. Status “Closed”:  - Case is closed - Case closed due to insufficient evidence to proceed (Criminal / Non- Criminal). Status “Solved”:  - Case is solved with charges laid or solved without charges laid. Why does York Regional Police share crime maps and other data with the public via the Community Safety Data Portal? The Community Safety Data Portal offers residents a glimpse of crime and police activity in their neighbourhoods. York Region Police hopes the Community Safety Data Portal will encourage the public to take an active role in community safety and crime prevention. We are proud to be a transparent organization and believe involving the community benefits us all. Are all incidents of crime included on the community safety map? The map only includes incidents for which a police report was filed. To protect individuals' privacy and safety, addresses at which incidents occurred are not included, and instead each occurrence is mapped to the nearest intersection. Certain types of crime are omitted for reasons of privacy or to protect the integrity of police investigations. What types of crimes are mapped? The data represented on the map includes, but is not limited to, proactive policing efforts, 
                                    break and enter, theft, theft of vehicle, theft from vehicle, homicide, robbery, assault, sex offences, arson, missing persons, weapons offences, 
                                    traffic enforcement, liquor and drug offences. There are many incidents in my neighbourhood; does that mean I live in a dangerous area? York Region is one of the safest communities in Canada. Some areas of the map may appear to have more incidents because all occurrence locations are mapped to the nearest intersection for privacy. Highly-populated areas, or areas with a high-volume of foot traffic, like shopping centers, entertainment venues, schools and parks, may be subject to more police reports. The rate of crime, however, may not necessarily be disproportionate. If you are

You can take note of crime trends in your area and ensure you take appropriate steps to protect yourself and your property. 
                                    We encourage you to mobilize members of your community in crime prevention initiatives, such as starting a Neighbourhood Watch program. How do I start a Neighbourhood Watch Program? To start a Neighbourhood Watch program please visit yrp.ca and

While the applications within the Community Safety Data Portal are not available in multiple languages, they should adapt natively to your existing browser language settings and respond to most translation extensions featured on popular browsers.

How often is the data updated? The crime map data is updated automatically each morning at approximately 3:00 am. 
                                    Some incidents may be excluded in this update process if an error is detected in the data and needs to be resolved before publishing to the crime map. Why is sex offender data not available? Information contained in the National and Provincial Sex Offender Registries is
                                    confidential. York Regional Police is prohibited by law from releasing such information How can I receive information and updates automatically? Any member of the public can sign up to receive the YRP e-Newsletter.

York Regional Police would consider removing a crime from the map under certain circumstances. Please contact the officer investigating your incident to make such a request. I believe there is an error on the map. How can I report it? If you suspect there is an error on the map, please contact your local police district to report it. York Regional Police will review the information and correct it, if necessary. What browser should I use to view the Community Safety Data Portal applications? Maps and dashboards in the Community Safety Data portal are compatible with most modern web browsers, including Chrome, Safari and Firefox. These applications may not be compatible with Internet Explorer or Edge Legacy browsers.
