Reducing Single Use and Takeaway Items

Phase 1 Consultation

This dataset includes responses from this public survey. The Online Survey was available from September 20, 2018 to October 28, 2018 and received approximately 20,000 responses.

In Fall 2018, Solid Waste Management Services held a series of engagement opportunities to seek feedback from the public on how to reduce single-use and takeaway items — such as coffee cups, plastic bags, take-out containers and plastic cutlery, etc., in Toronto. Engagement was focused on determining which single-use or takeaway items residents and stakeholders are most interested in addressing and their preferred methods or approaches to reducing these items or promoting additional reuse. An online survey was hosted by the City of Toronto, available online from September 20, 2018 to October 28, 2018. The results of quantitative questions from this survey are presented in this dataset. The definition presented for a single-use or takeaway item was: A single-use or takeaway item is any product designed for a single use after which is it disposed of, whether into garbage or a waste diversion stream, as solid waste. Typically, these products are not designed for durability or reuse.

Phase 2 Consultation

In the fall of 2019, Solid Waste Management Services held another series of engagement opportunities to gather feedback from the public on the approaches and proposed timelines to reduce specific single-use and takeaway items.

This dataset includes responses from this public survey and independent polling. The Online Survey was available from September 24, 2019 to November 11, 2019 and received approximately 23,700 responses. A sample of 1,000 Toronto residents aged 16 or older was surveyed online as part of the independent polling from November 26 to December 3, 2019.
