Benchmarks, Vertical Control
To show vertical elevations for a project through topographic surveys. Establish elevations for a network of monuments called benchmarks. A benchmark is a relatively permanent material object, natural or artificial, bearing a marked point whose elevation above or below an adopted datum is known. Vertical datums for referencing benchmark elevations are based on mean sea level. The basic vertical control for topographic mapping of the benchmarks or other points of known elevation established throughout a project, also termed basic control or level control. This data is all within the limits of the York Region Boundary and most were established approximately 20 years ago. Most are still considered accurate but it is suggested that they should be checked against other benchmarks to make sure.
