White Sturgeon - Web Viewer - South Coast SBOT
The Stewardship Baseline Objectives Tool (SBOT) is a visualization and assessment tool to clarify and communicate baseline information and stewardship objectives for priority resource values. Currently, the tool is developed for the South Coast Region. The intent of the tool is to assess the current, past and future state of stewardship objectives to support operational, tactical and strategic management decisions for these priority resource values.
The White Sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) is the largest freshwater fish species in North America with some individuals reaching over 100 years of age and over six metres in total length. In British Columbia and Canada, there are only six known spawning populations inhabiting the Fraser, Columbia and Kootenay River systems. The lower Fraser population is the largest and has many life history strategies because of its unimpeded access to in-river, marine and large lake habitats. This provides for an amazing opportunity to study White Sturgeon and monitor the lower Fraser population under relatively natural conditions, but also poses extra challenges.
In the lower Fraser, Pitt and Harrison River systems, White Sturgeon occupy all available habitats including the estuary, main and side channel areas, and the large and small connected lakes. Because they are late maturing and long lived with life-long reproduction, specific habitat use varies by life stage, season, and prey availability. White Sturgeon feed on an abundance of prey organisms depending on their life stage, including benthic invertebrates such as crustaceans and molluscs, and all fish and their spawn, including Eulachon and all five Pacific salmon species. They are very particular about the habitats they choose for spawning, rearing, feeding and overwintering and their timing of use. In winter, they gather in several deep pools to congregate and from late-May through mid-July in the gravel reach to spawn, with their tiny larvae rearing initially in these same areas.
