Grizzly Bear - Web Viewer - South Coast SBOT
The Stewardship Baseline Objectives Tool (SBOT) is a visualization and assessment tool to clarify and communicate baseline information and stewardship objectives for priority resource values. Currently, the tool is developed for the South Coast Region. The intent of the tool is to assess the current, past and future state of stewardship objectives to support operational, tactical and strategic management decisions for these priority resource values.
B.C. supports approximately 15,000 grizzly bears, which represents a quarter of the North American population, including Alaska. Grizzly bears historically occurred throughout B.C., except for some coastal islands, but are considered extirpated from much of southwest and south-central B.C. as well as the Peace Lowlands. Grizzly bears are wide-ranging, opportunistic omnivores with low reproductive and dispersal rates. Average multi-year adult female home ranges in B.C. are between 50 and 400 km2 with smaller home ranges in higher productivity habitats. Male home ranges are larger, ranging from 500-2,000 km2 with high variation, and overlapping with several females.
