Data Stories A gallery of data stories that combine narratives and multimedia with data and analytics Martin Brooks: Quiet City Quiet City runs from May 2nd until May 28th. Martin Brooks presents Quiet City, an exhibition featuring painterly views captured through the City of Ottawa traffic camera network. Quiet City utilizes images from approximately 275 traffic cameras available under the City’s Open Data License. Martin uses his original mathematical ShapeVision software to transform these photographs into a fabric of colourful shapes at multiple levels of detail. This unique process is the result of a long research journey into math and code to capture complexity in natural and urban phenomena. Drawing on fractal geometry and the work of mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot, Martin creates painterly compositions.” The project involves a dedicated monitoring process where Martin observes live camera feeds, waiting for moments of light and interest. The creative work bridges objective pure mathematics with subjective artistic composition, offering viewers a unique lens with which to see the urban landscape. Quiet City provides a fascinating visual experience that is both engaging and a reflection on the confluence of truth and beauty in the digital and physical worlds. CityStudio Ottawa From concepts to tangible solutions, HUBBUB showcases and celebrates the collaborative spirit that defines our city. Each project highlights our dedication to a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable Ottawa. Open Ottawa was pleased to sponsor the following projects: Learn more about these inspiring projects aimed at creating a more inclusive, sustainable and healthier Ottawa. Open Data Video Through the City Studio Ottawa program, the Open Data team had the opportunity to work with a talented group of students from the Media and Design program at Algonquin College. The challenge we gave to the students was to create a short video highlighting the benefits of open data and demonstrate practical applications for residents to use the City data. The students developed personas, storyboards, and a script for the video. They scoped out filming locations, captured the video footage, developed and edited digital content and pulled it all together in a comprehensive two-minute video. The final video does an excellent job showcasing our beautiful city and the benefits of open data. Community Food Bank Visits in the Ottawa Food Bank Coverage Area Food bank use has surged in recent years due to the rising cost of living and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. How much has food bank use changed, and which neighbourhoods are seeing the greatest increases in food bank use? This dashboard by the Ottawa Neighbourhood Study lets you explore food bank use in neighbourhoods served by the Ottawa Food Bank network. Through this portal, members of the public can view, download, and interact with data released by Ottawa Police Services. A Housing Profile of Ottawa Housing in Ottawa is a major issue. In January 2020, the City of Ottawa declared a housing and homelessness emergency. Four years later, what does the data tell us about the housing landscape in Ottawa. We have produced an interactive story map featuring maps, graphs, and dashboards showing housing data from a wide variety of sources, integrated in one place. Neighbourhood Equity Index .btn-mine { background-color: #052E41; border-color: #ffffff; color: #fff; } .btn-mine:hover, .btn-mine:focus { background-color: #11AA8D; color: #000; } The Ottawa Neighbourhood Equity Index (NEI) is a tool to assess and compare unnecessary and unfair differences at a neighbourhood level on factors impacting wellbeing. The Index measures how each neighbourhood is doing in five domains of wellbeing supported by 28 indicators. The NEI is a tool to help residents, planners, key stakeholders and decision makers identify disparities between neighbourhoods and tackle them in a systematic and organized way. This video showcases how the City of Ottawa has leveraged cutting-edge geospatial solutions for more effective urban planning and decision making. Experience the power of visualization and location analytics to help plan future communities. This video emphasizes the importance of integrating vast city datasets into a Digital Twin system to understand urban projects more comprehensively. The video explores the practical applications of this technology in city planning, infrastructure development, public engagement, and land development. Automated Speed Enforcements .btn-mine { background-color: #052E41; border-color: #ffffff; color: #fff; } .btn-mine:hover, .btn-mine:focus { background-color: #11AA8D; color: #000; } Speed data collected and stored by Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras is used to track and measure the effectiveness of the program. Data evaluated through the ASE program has shown that there’s been a significant reduction in driving speed and an increase in compliance to the posted speed limit, across all camera sites. These improvements are directly correlated with increased safety for all road users.
