Under the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR), registered creators, foreign suppliers and carbon-intensity contributors can use the Fuel Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Model to calculate a carbon intensity (CI) for the purposes of creating credits. In order to calculate those CIs, the following documents supplement the existing Fuel LCA Model Database, Methodology and User Manual: 1) CFR Specifications for Fuel LCA Model CI Calculations: This document provides instructions for calculating CI values of fuels, energy sources and material input for creating credits under the CFR. This document also provides default values, high heating values, emission factors and energy efficiency ratios that can be used to create credits and calculation methodology to follow when more than one feedstock is used to produce a fuel, a material input or an energy source. 2) CFR Data Workbook: This spreadsheet helps convert applicant data into data input for the Fuel LCA Model. For the purpose of the CFR, it must be used to carry out all calculations (i.e. unit conversion, calculation of allocation factors, etc.) prior to data entry in the Fuel LCA Model. 3) Supplemental CFR Data Workbook - Landfill Methane Tool: This spreadsheet works in conjunction with the CFR Data Workbook to assess if methane emissions reductions from landfill gas management can be accounted for in the CI of biogas or renewable natural gas. The CFR Specifications for Fuel LCA Model Carbon Intensity Calculations provides instructions on when and how the two workbooks should be used. The CFR Specifications for Fuel LCA Model CI Calculations and the CFR Data Workbook have been updated since the initial publication in July 2022. The previous versions of these documents are available in the ‘Archive’ folder. To report potential errors in these documents, please contact us at cfsncp@ec.gc.ca. |
