LiDAR: Rendering the world in detail LiDAR for Vegetation Management A map showing LiDAR vegetation management Month: November 2021Organization: Elexicon EnergyProducts: ArcGIS Pro Vegetation is a leading cause of service interruption for electricity distributors. LiDAR-based vegetation management is rapidly growing in popularity and practicality. Elexicon Energy engaged Quantum Spatial Canada to perform a LiDAR pilot acquisition, with one deliverable centred around vegetation management. The pilot area included a section that was identified as a hotspot in the previous analysis using Esri’s Space Time Pattern Mining tools. Rendering the world in detail: from data to 3D model Orthomosaic DSM The “Munich—Leica CityMapper 2: DSM, 3D Mesh and GIS Layers” app is a great example of the capabilities that can be unlocked when LiDAR data is processed in ArcGIS. Let’s see how this app combines aerial imagery and point cloud data collected using LiDAR to create a digital twin of this major German city. An animated GIF showing a photo of Munich in ArcGIS Online. The user adjusts the angle of the image, revealing that it is two-dimensional. An orthomosaic image is a collection of aerial images stitched together and colour corrected to create one seamless mosaic dataset. The mosaic is also geometrically corrected using a digital surface model (DSM) to resolve any distortion that may have occurred before or during the stitching process. This results in a highly accurate DSM orthomosaic layer that is used to create tiled image and tile cache map layers as well as conduct change analysis within an area of interest. 3D Point Cloud An animated GIF showing an image of central Munich. The user opens up a menu and clicks on the option that says "3D Point Cloud". The image appears to turn into a set of closely packed points. A 3D point cloud layer is a collection of closely packed points that, taken together, resemble the real world. Each point has an x, y and z value and can also contain a classification based on its material type including vegetation, ground points, buildings and more. 3D point cloud layers can be used to isolate a specific material type and perform analysis to find out, for example, how vegetation is affecting the utility networks in the area. 3D Mesh The 3D mesh layer is a surface made up of small triangles. It is generated using the 3D point cloud layer. An animated GIF showing an image of central Munich in ArcGIS Online. The user opens a menu and clicks on an option called "3D Mesh". This uses previously generated point cloud data to show a 3D version of the city. The 3D mesh layer is used to create a virtual representation of the real world, also known as a digital twin. Digital twins are often used to observe and monitor change as well as test and predict future states of the natural and built environment. We can use digital twins to gain a new perspective when planning and managing utility networks, parcel boundaries and traffic networks in major cities as well as how they are impacted by the surrounding environment. An animated GIF showing central Munich in ArcGIS. The user pulls the image back and forth, showing that the buildings, trees and roads have been rendered in three dimensions. View the Munich app for yourself Check out these amazing outside-of-the-box applications of LiDAR LiDAR Images Show Mayan Civilization in a New Light Image of Mayan ruins surrounded by forest, with blue sky above them.
