Know where to plan ahead: Situational awareness and wildfires in North America KDCFS Bjerkness/Kaslo/Shutty Landscape Level Wildfire Plan 2019 A map of wildfire plan in British Columbia Month: July 2021Organization: Upwest GeomaticsProducts: ArcGIS Pro In 2020, the Kaslo and District Community Forest Society in southeastern British Columbia completed a Landscape-Level Wildfire Plan within its tenure area. The planning was undertaken in the wake of some of the largest and fiercest wildfires in recent BC history and was guided by the Provincial Strategic Threat Analysis initiative. The incorporation of field-captured data on a slope/aspect matrix map is a reference resource for ongoing fuel reduction project efforts as well as fire suppression strategies to be used if a wildfire should threaten communities in the Kaslo/North Kootenay Lake area. See how GIS is helping with wildfire management in Canada and the US Alberta Fire Bans The Alberta Fire Bans mobile app aims to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding fire bans, advisories, restrictions and forest closure areas throughout the province of Alberta. Participating municipalities and jurisdictions, with support from community members, are able to post their alerts to the app and notify their communities about updates. View all alerts currently in place Navigate through the different alert tabs to see the fire bans, advisories and restrictions currently active in Alberta. You can also search for your jurisdiction using the search bar. Use location services to zoom in on your area The app will display a clear indicator to inform you of the alert status in your area. You can also view the alerts occurring in surrounding areas. Stay informed on the specific rules and regulations Learn more about the alert including its effective date, specific restrictions, allowances, and safety measures. Neighboring jurisdictions may have different fire safety regulations. Read the alert description to get informed. Be prepared and sign up for notifications Whether you're planning a bonfire or visiting a campsite, be prepared by signing up for notifications in that area. Each participating municipality and jurisdiction is responsible for posting their own alerts. BC Wildfire Service The BC Wildfire Service mobile app provides real-time wildfire information to members of the public on their mobile devices. Receive notifications with the latest news from the BC Wildlife Service and stay informed on wildfires occurring in your area. Set up notifications to receive important alerts Push notifications keep you informed of the latest news from the BC Wildfire Service. You can customize your notifications based on specified locations and receive important alerts about wildfire events that may be occurring near you. Select a wildfire for more information The simple and easy-to-use map allows you to keep up with specific wildfires. Select a wildfire to learn about its active status, suspected cause, approximate location and stage of control. Toggle between numerous informative map layers View the locations of active fires, evacuation orders, wildfire perimeters and more. The Wildfire Danger Rating layer indicates how easily fires can start and spread in your area. View statistics and customizable charts related to current active fires Get the most up-to-date information. The data is updated every two hours. View how the number of currently active fires compares to the total number of fires in the current year. See how GIS tools are being used to maintain situational awareness for other types of disasters GIS data & resources EmergencyMapBC: Use this map as a general reference for current public safety conditions during emergencies in British Columbia. BC Wildfire Dashboard: Use this app to see the current year of fires in British Columbia, including number of fires to date, number of active fires and changes in these numbers as well as the locations of the fires. The data is refreshed from operational systems every two hours. Scholarship winner Patrick Droste uses LiDAR data to assess wildfire risk: Read this case study to learn more about how this GIS student used modelling software to calculate a wildfire risk score for buildings within a specific area.
