Trips by emerging modes (shared mobility, ride-hailing, and car share) + What are we doing? + What's next? Kelowna is one of over 35 BC communities participating in the provincial e-scooter pilot project, first announced in March 2021, and now extended to 2028. By 2025, over 2.2 million trips had been made by shared micromobility in Kelowna. These usage trends show that shared e-bikes and e-scooters are providing people with a new and convenient way to get around, while reducing traffic congestion and emissions, without increasing taxation. The program continues to develop and improve, and several features have been added to address concerns. Examples include sidewalk riding detection, parking audits, attached helmets, mandatory parking areas, rider enforcement and fines for repeat rule infractions, and rider education campaigns. We have been leading by example for a decade by using car share services to replace some of it’s their fleet and provide more options for staff for short term and daily use. We have helped expand car share through the provision of designated car share parking spaces in new developments paired with free memberships and driving credits to these development residents. We have also collaborated with the car share provider in Kelowna to electrify shared vehicles and further reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This year we delivered another spring and summer season of bike valet service during the Meet Me on Bernard Road closures. The service operated seven days a week with additional hours during peak events and In response to the Province announcing a four-year extension of the e-scooter pilot in 2024, we renewed our permit program, through a competitive selection process, to run until the summer of 2026 with possible extension to 2027 and 2028. During this term, we will continue work with the current program operator to strengthen practices that improve safety, reduce clutter and maximize benefit to residents and visitors.
