Land Cover Classification 2014 - 5m Hybrid (Raster)

A land cover classification for Metro Vancouver, Abbotsford and a 5km buffer, providing a contiguous surface mapped to broad biophysical classes. Created using RapidEye 5m multi-spectral satellite imagery and full feature LiDAR data (wherever available). The imagery dates from August 2014.

This is the LCC2014_5m_Hybrid version of the 2014 Land Cover Classification.

Two approaches were taken to create the land cover depending on whether LiDAR data was available or not. Three layers were created in all:

  • LCC2014_2m_LiDAR – for LiDAR coverage areas, the classification was completed using both LiDAR and RapidEye. The resulting layer has a resolution of 2m because of the addition of LiDAR.

  • LCC2014_5m_NonHybrid – the entire study area was classified using only RapidEye and the output has a resolution of 5m. This layer is not generally recommended for use so is not provided as standard.

  • LCC2014_5m_Hybrid – the 2m LiDAR layer was downscaled to 5m, and merged with the 5m non-hybrid, creating a seamless 5m hybrid layer for the study area.

The 5m hybrid or 2m LiDAR are recommended for most uses.

Criteria

Built-up

Buildings

--

Identified using shape/size, shadow cast, height, relative canopy height, texture.

Paved

--

Everything from sidewalks and alleys to highways.

Other Built

--

Not concrete/asphalt built surfaces or building roofs. Sports surfaces (artificial turf and running tacks), possibly transit or rail areas, other impervious surfaces, etc.

Bare

Barren

--

Beaches, alpine rock, shoreline rock, etc. Lack of vegetation. Likely not soil (colour/context suggests no organic matter and/or imperviousness). Also quarries, gravel pits, dirt roads.

Soil

--

Agricultural soils (could be light or dark), cleared/open areas where darker colours indicate organic matter present (as compared to, e.g. sand), potentially riverine/alluvial deposits.

Vegetation

Tree canopy

Coniferous

Predominantly coniferous (>75%)

Deciduous

Predominantly deciduous (>75%)

Shrub

Woody, leafy, and generally rough-textured vegetation shorter than trees (approx. <3-4m), taller than grass.

Grass-herb

Modified Grass-herb

Crops, golf course greens, city park grass, lawns, etc.

Natural Grass-herb

Alpine meadows, near-shore grass areas, bog/wetland areas.

Non-photosynthetic vegetation

--

Dead grass, drought stressed vegetation, could include log booms.

Water

--

--

Lakes, rivers, inlets, irrigation channels, retention ponds, pools, etc.

Shadow

--

--

Dark pixels with v/ low reflectance values. Image features not easily visible. Compare w/ RapidEye image for shadow locations.

Clouds/Ice

--

--

Very bright pixels, that are not high-reflectance features from built-up areas.
