February 2021
How location is helping Canadian conservation efforts 2020’s focus was largely on human health. But with climate change, resource extraction, road development and human settlement continuing apace, the health of Canadian plant and animal species remains of urgent concern. So how are ecologists and conservationists using location technology to help manage the risks to plant and wildlife species in Canada? And how is GIS helping different stakeholder groups—including Indigenous peoples, scientists, government representatives and donors—engage with one another throughout these efforts? Find out with these stories and apps, including our selection for the Esri Canada Map Calendar for February 2021, Caribou Herd Ranges of the Dawson Planning Region. Caribou Herd Ranges of the Dawson Planning Region Community Month: February2021Organization: Yukon Land Use Planning CouncilProduct(s): ArcMap Land claims in the Yukon spell out how regional First Nations, the Government of Yukon and Yukoners are to work together in creating a plan for their region. Today, the Dawson Regional Planning Commission is working with the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation and Government of Yukon to create a regional plan for the Dawson Region. This map was created to depict the region’s caribou herd ranges and is part of a larger collection of information about the region. With this map and others in hand, the Commission is beginning to make land and resource decisions leading to the overall plan. Mapping for risk mitigation Thanks to the efforts of groups like the Yukon Land Use Planning Council to map and create systems of record using GIS, it's much easier for us to visualize exactly where species at risk are. This way, we can see where they might come into contact with human settlements, developments or operations, even indirectly. With this knowledge in hand, we're much better equipped to protect these species. You've seen the map on caribou ranges above.
