GIS in communities December is synonymous with charity and charity is about community. The Oxford Dictionary defines community as 1) a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common, and 2) a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals. Communities are the fabric of our societies. In this month’s curated content, we’re featuring community examples that have a geographic element. Members of these communities are using GIS to collaborate on initiatives that affect them. Our map of the month, “Explore Central Map” by the Town of Truro, guides us in this: created during the COVID-19 pandemic, the map encourages community members to continue pursuing leisure activities, but a bit closer to home. In this same vein, our other examples showcase how communities are using apps to support economic development, inclusion, local heritage and more. We hope they’ll inspire you and your community.
