Bedrock Geology
British Columbia Digital Geology is the data source used for the seamless province-wide, up-to-date, and detailed bedrock geology. The bedrock geology is standardized with consistent stratigraphic code and geometries, and integrates all details of compilations from 1:50,000 to 1:250,000. The latest release (Open File 2017-8) is maintained by a geospatial frame data model, which consists of attributed geological contacts and faults as linework, and outcrops or centroids as points attributed with bedrock information. Techniques are used to simplify the integration process and shorten the timeframe from field mapping, compilation, integration, to data delivery. The release also contains: tables for geological units and colours; ESRI layer files containing bedrock colour symbols; and a map of British Columbia illustrating the suggested colour theme for the bedrock polygons. Related data sets are Geology Faults and Quaternary Alluvium and Cover. Bedrock Geology is interactive with other geoscience data on MapPlace and MapPlace 2 and is available for download in shapefile format.

Polygon coverage of geology was compiled at 1:100,000 scale as part of the BC Geological Survey mineral potential project, 1994-1996. Original coding was revised and rationalized in 2001-2002 by D.G. MacIntyre, and updated and revised in 2002-2004 by N.W.D. Massey. New mapping completed after 1996 is being added to this file through the BCGeologyMap project, lead by Yao Cui. Recent enhancements include: January, 2010 - Updates with geological map for QUEST area. January, 2011 - Clean-up of line work for geological boundaries. October, 2013 - Updates with geological maps for Kutcho, North Coast, and Terrace; added names for some of the major faults. October, 2015 - Updates with geological maps for northern Vancouver Island; updates with new terrane map. May 31, 2016 - Fixed errors and inconsistencies in map units. July 7, 2017 - Update bedrock geology for the Chilcotin and Bonaparte area; updated bedrock legend colours for the entire province. August 22, 2017 - New stratigraphic age symbol font (for labelling map units). November 14, 2017 - Minor fixes of stratigraphic code. Updates to Chilcotin-Bonaparte, northern Vancouver Island, North Coast, Kutcho, QUEST, and Terrace. April 5, 2018 - Updated terrane designation for units in the southeastern BC. December 19, 2019 - Integrated bedrock geology of Iskut area by Nelson (2019) and Bowser and Sustut Basins by Evenchick et al. (2009). |
