The footnotes in the table are represented in brackets.
Footnotes: 1 The universe of this table is restricted to residential properties that are owned and occupied by single-property owners whose aggregated family income at the property level in 2017 was greater than zero. Properties owned by non-individuals such as firms and governments, as well as properties that are solely owned by non-residents of Canada are excluded. A residential property refers to all land and structures intended for private occupancy, whether on a permanent or a temporary basis. 2 The geographic boundaries used in this table are the 2018 census subdivisions boundaries. 3 All counts undergo random rounding, a process that transforms all raw counts into randomly rounded counts. This reduces the possibility of identifying individuals in the tabulations. Subtotals and totals may not exactly equal the sum of component parts due to system rounding. 4 Owner-occupied property refers to a property in which at least one owner declares it as their usual residence. Property type refers to property characteristics and/or dwelling configuration, on which there can be one or more residential structures. 5 A residential property may be owned by members of one or more families. For properties owned by multiple families, the family category assigned is based on the family with the highest income. 6 Pension income refers to income received from public and private sources such as Canada Pension Plan (CPP) or Quebec Pension Plan (QPP), Old Age Security (OAS), net federal supplements, and Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). 7 Income at the property level is obtained by summing the before-tax family income of all owners on the title, which may include the income of family members who are not on the title, and the family income of members from other families who are on the title. 8 "Other census family" refers to persons who are not matched to a family. They may be living alone, with a family to whom they are related, with a family to whom they are unrelated or with other persons not in census families. 9 "Assessment value" refers to the assessed value of the property for the purpose of determining property taxes. It is important to note that the assessed value does not necessarily represent the market value. The assessment values in Nova Scotia and British Columbia are in 2017 dollars, while the assessment values in Ontario are in 2016 dollars. Given that different provinces and territories have their own assessment periods and durations of the valuation roll, it is difficult to make accurate comparisons of similar properties from one province or territory to another. For properties that are being utilized for both residential and non-residential purposes, only the residential partitions' value has been taken into account. 10 The total family income aggregated at the property level is used to calculate this ratio.
