The Nayaano-nibiimaang Gichigamiin - the five freshwater seas – Great Lakes and its Basin is the traditional territory of many First Nations and Tribes withing Canada and the United States.
The Great Lakes are a group of five huge freshwater lakes between the United States and Canada. The Great Lakes are the largest freshwater source on earth by surface and volume. Once referred to as the “Sweetwater Seas” by early European colonists, the Great Lakes have long provided humans with clean drinking water, productive fisheries and recreational beauty. First Nations fishing, aboriginal and
human rights vis-à-vis Great Lakes pollution. Aspects of the Great Lakes hydrology, population demands, water and land uses, and degradation are all interests that we have in common.
The purpose of this platform is a central space to provide tools, resources and information that will build awareness and outreach on Great Lakes matters that are priority and interest of the Anishinabek First Nation.
