Traffic related injuries and fatalities per capita + What are we doing? + What's next? in 2023, according to ICBC. Roughly one-third (1,300) of these resulted in an injury of fatality (injury collision). From 2018 to 2023, the total number of injury collisions decreased by 22 per cent (from 1,600 to 1284), demonstrating a downward trend over time. People drove more in 2022 than in 2021, however the number of injury collisions stayed relatively stable (slight reduction). From 2018 to 2023, people walked and biked more. The total number of injury collisions involving people walking and cycling have fluctuated. Data for 2024 is not yet available. The City continuously strives to improve road safety for our residents. In 2024, we signalized Dilworth Drive and Leckie Drive, we installed seven new crosswalk flashers, completed crosswalk designs for four additional projects, and delivered seven traffic calming projects. In partnership with ICBC, the City implemented innovative safety measures, such as rumble strips at the corners of Leckie Drive and Enterprise Way. The City also installed Smart-Right turn channels at KLO Road/Richter Street and at Highway 97/Leckie Road. The City Accessibility Plan is guiding accessibility improvements across City programs and services. Building on this work, we began developing the Transportation Accessibility Strategy. We are currently developing our Safe Mobility Action Plan. The plan will identify key focus areas and actions to reduce serious injuries and fatalities across all modes of transportation. Future road safety projects include: · Intersection improvements on Springfield Avenue and Dilworth Road · Safe Routes 4 Schools program wrap up with Quigley Elementary and initiating at Bellevue Creek Elementary · McClure Road and Cornwall sidewalk completion · Raymer Road (McClure to Gordon) and Clifton (Cara Glen to Rio) sidewalk design · KLO at Immaculata School halfsignal design and construction · Seven new crosswalk improvements plus several intersection accessibility improvements
