ANISHINABEK DNAKIIWINAN (PLACES / AREAS) results

Dnakiiwinan (Places) and Areas - The Anishinabek Nation Lands & Resources Department have initiated a project that will collect information, and knowledge of places or areas that are significant to the Anishinabek Nation, 39 First Nations and their citizens.

The Lands & Resources Department initiated to capture places and areas in their original names. As the first occupants of the Great Lakes Region, the Anishinaabe gave names to the surrounding landscapes. Cultural knowledge and language is revitalized by virtue of daily use, spiritual connections, and increased awareness of history. The geographic naming for this project is continuous work in progress. As we know place names are not static and the landscapes evolve.
