As Kelowna grows, maintaining reasonably stable travel times requires a balanced approach that includes targeted road upgrades, better intersection operations, and continued investment in transit and active transportation so more trips can be made without driving. measure remained relatively stable in 2025. Since 2020, the City has tracked afternoon peak-period traffic conditions between urban centres and core areas using travel time data for 68 origin-destination pairs. The proportion of routes experiencing moderate or greater delay increased from 27% in 2020 to 54% in 2025. The population grew over the same period from approximately 148,000 to 168,000 residents. While delay increased considerably between 2020 and 2024, conditions remained relatively stable in 2025, with a slight decrease from 57% of routes experiencing moderate or greater delay in 2024 to 54% in 2025. It is important to note that travel patterns during the earlier years of this data set, particularly 2020 through 2022, were influenced by the effects of COVID-19 and may not fully reflect long-term travel trends. Faster than expected growth in Kelowna has increased the need for expanded transportation infrastructure. To address this, we initiated the Transportation Accelerator Program (TAP) in 2024, to strategically advance key projects identified in the 10-year Capital Plan. In 2025 we advanced design work on major road extensions (Frost, Burtch, and Hollywood) and delivered the Frost–Chute Lake roundabout to improve network capacity, reduce bottlenecks and support more efficient traffic flow. Where possible, these improvements were coordinated with utility upgrades and other capital work to reduce disruption and maximize value for residents. Work also continued on Glenmore Road upgrades in conjunction with water and wastewater trunk main installation, and construction began on the K.L.O. Road Bridge replacement over Mission Creek and roundabout at Spiers Road intersection. In addition to capital work, we continued improving corridor operations by enhancing traffic detection and signal performance at key intersections along Springfield Road. We are preparing several transportation projects to be accelerated ahead of schedule in the Transportation Master Plan.  Key road projects in 2026 will include upgrades to Glenmore Road, Burtch Road, Lakeshore Road, completion of the KLO Bridge Replacement project and continued progress on major network road extensions such as Burtch Road and Hollywood Road. Planning and design will also continue for key projects including the Clement Crosstown Connector. The Springfield Road and Dilworth Road intersection and Richter Street corridor projects will also enter detailed design phases. This year we will also continue to review projects to add to the Transportation Accelerator Program (TAP). Beyond expanding vehicle capacity, we are committed to providing residents with convenient alternatives to driving including transit, active transportation infrastructure and shared micromobility.  The better these alternatives become, the less often residents will find themselves "stuck" in traffic.
