GIS: See below the surface of your business data Most organizations are concerned about how their businesses operate on the Earth’s surface. The mining and oil & gas industries are more concerned with what’s beneath it. This month, let's look below the surface and learn about mining and oil & gas companies using GIS to go beyond surface mapping. Our Map of the Month for May 2021, “Open Pit Progression, Rainy River Mine”, shows how New Gold Inc. has used Esri technology to model the progression of one of their open pit mines in 3D. We've paired this map with a blog post by Madison Mackey that shows how they did it. Mining and oil & gas companies are also using GIS technology to manage their data, track workers in the field and streamline their workflows. Watch Alamos Gold’s video and read a story from Repsol to see how they’ve been using Esri technology to improve their businesses. Open Pit Progression, Rainy River Mine A 3D map of open pit progression in the Rainy River Mine Month: May 2021Organization: New Gold Inc.Products: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS 3D Analyst This 3D scene shows the progression of an existing open pit in relation to the ultimate open pit design. The site is situated at the New Gold Rainy River Mine near Emo, Ontario. The map is a 3D scene created in ArcGIS Pro 2.6.1. All processing of data for this scene, including the layout and graphic elements, was completed in ArcGIS Pro. The map shows a sectional view of the mine’s open pit where the bottom of the pit is the planned ultimate pit shell and the 3D drone model is the latest topography. The original ground mean elevation line as well as the pre-existing ground profile are also shown for reference.
