Mapping Opportunities for Renewable Energy Development

Upper River Valley Region, New Brunswick, Canada

Countries and communities all over the world are working on a transition away from fossil energy resources, and toward renewable energy resources. This transition will bring tremendous opportunities and benefits to our communities in a multitude of ways. Renewable energy systems can be very small scale and therefore less expensive to build, which enables individuals, families, and small communities to own and operate these systems directly. They also provide more local jobs per unit of energy generated than our conventional energy systems (Ram et al., 2020). In other words, renewable energy development contributes to local economic resilience, and spreads the financial benefits of energy production more evenly across society.

Through renewable energy systems, we can improve local air quality by running our city buses and personal vehicles on clean electricity or hydrogen. This can reduce cases of respiratory illnesses, which is especially important for the very young, the very old, and those with existing respiratory conditions.
