Governments and other institutions collect vast amounts of data, much of which is shared with the public. In many cases, the data can be hard to find, complex, or messy and hard to use without investing time and money into processing. We are helping to increase transparency, by providing this data to the public in easy to use formats, often as shapefiles or CSV tables, that can be quickly imported into GIS software by the end user. Analysis based on demographics such as population, age, income, and others can be performed using open data and GIS software, which adds a spatial and visual component to the analysis. A key benefit of using open geospatial data is the ability to bring in multiple datasets that may appear unrelated and create layers that can be compared within the GIS software. This can allow for comparison of multiple types of data to look for trends in certain areas within communities. These different layers of data can be combined or overlaid with statistics such as population, age, education level, and others to identify trends related to concerns within the community.
